Sea-Devil, Legendary Creature

Woodcut entitled: On the devil fish (or sea-devil), 1563, based on a skeleton and mummies. In Greek mythology ichthyocentaurs (or ikhthyokentauroi) were a pair of centaurine sea-gods with the upper body of a man, the lower front of a horse, the tail of a fish and they wore lobster-claw horns. Conrad Gesner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. His five-volume Historiae animalium (1551-1558) is considered the beginning of modern zoology, and the flowering plant genus Gesneria (Gesneriaceae) is named after him. He is denoted by the author abbreviation Gesner when citing a botanical name.
