Obverse of a 10 peseta banknote of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Barcelona, 25 September 1936. The Spanish Civil War caused serious economic problems, such as the lack of fractional currency. The regional government's ministry of Finance of the Generalitat de Catalunya, under the presidency of Josep Tarradellas (1899-1988), decreed in September 1936 a plan to issue legal tender paper money for Catalonia, with the backing of the Generalitat's treasury and outside the Bank of Spain. Several values were planned, although only the 2.5, 5 and 10 peseta banknotes were put into circulation. The Government of the Spanish Republic prohibited it in 1938. The design was made by the noucentista artist Josep Obiols (1894-1967). National Archaeological Museum. Madrid. Spain.
