Sir George Jessel, Master of the Rolls, 1881. Jessel (1824-1883) was called to the bar at Lincolns Inn in 1847. He entered Parliament as a Liberal MP for Dover in 1868, and was appointed Solicitor-General in 1871, after having impressed Gladstone with two speeches in the House on the Bankruptcy Bill. In 1873 Jessel succeeded Lord Romilly as Master of the Rolls, a position he held until his death in 1883. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
