Aesop, Ancient Greek Fabulist

Aesop (620 - 564 BC) was a Greek fabulist and storyteller. Aesop's Fables is a collection of fables credited to him. Of diverse origins, the stories associated with his name have descended to modern times through a number of sources and continue to be reinterpreted in different verbal registers and in popular as well as artistic media. Many of the tales are characterized by animals and inanimate objects that speak, solve problems, and have human characteristics. Some scholars believe Aesop was Ethiopian supported by the presence of camels, elephants and apes in the fables. Woodcut (cropped and converted to bw) by Francis Barlow, from The Fables of Aesop translated by John Ogilvy, circa 1666.
