Cuthbert, Lord Collingwood, 1750-1810. Born at Newcastle-on-Tyne. Entered the navy as a volunteer on the Shannon frigate at the age of eleven. Lieutenant 1773, for services at Bunker's Hill. Court-martialled at Port Royal 1777, and censured of the Badger for "want of cheerfulness in the carrying on the duty of his shop "(the Hornet). First Lieutenant of Lowestoft under Sir P. Parker (vice Nelson), and followed Nelson as commander of the Badger 1779, and captain of the Hinchinborke 1780; captain of the Barfleur in the action of June 1, 1794. Under Jervis in the Excellent at Toulon 1796, and St.Vincent 1799, vice admiral 1804. Led the lee line at Trafalgar 1805, and assumed chief command on Nelson's death. Created a Baron for his services, and led a comparitively uneventful life in command of the Mediterranean Squadron. On his death in 1810, he lay in state in the Painted Hall, and was buried beside Nelson in St Paul's.
