Meeting Between Robert Devereux and Hugh O'Neill,1599

Hugh O'Neill (1550 - July 20 1616) was an Irish Gaelic lord, Earl of Tyrone. Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (November 10, 1565 - February 25, 1601), was an English nobleman. On September 7, 1599, during the northern campaign of the Nine Years' War, O'Neill asked to meet with Essex. Essex rejected the meeting place, but O'Neill found a spot to ride into the river up to his horse's belly. It was a gesture of humility, and Essex rode with a troop of horse to an overlooking hill before going down alone to the ford, where he conversed with the rebel for half an hour. Both men withdrew to their companies on the hills. An Illustrated History of Ireland by Mary Francis Cusack, 1868 (cropped and cleaned).
