EUGENIO VELA (D. 1895). SPANISH ENGRAVER.. Performance of the play 'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Penultimate scene of Act 5. It takes place in a room of the castle where a sword contest between Hamlet and Laertes has just been played out, wager promoted by Claudius, the King of Denmark. After the third round, Laertes wounds Hamlet, being at the same time wounded with his own poisoned sword. Laertes is shown leaning on a group of servants. Queen Gertrude had toasted Hamlet, drinking from a cup presented to her by a page containing a poisoned pearl placed by Claudius, with the intention of presenting it to Hamlet to drink a toast if he were victorious.
