Marey Wheel Photographs, 1884

"Marey wheel photographs of John Laurie Wallace (?)" by Thomas Eakins, from 1884. Artist and photographer Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) did early experiments in high-speed photography at the University of Pennslyvania. He constructed his own equipment to record motion after learning about Etienne-Jules Marey's ideas; the "Marey wheel" he built rotated inside the camera and could capture multiple exposures on one plate.
