Emperor's Election, Liber Chronicarum (series title), Double-leaf representation (here in two parts) from the Liber Chronicarum. It shows the German emperor as head of the Holy Roman Empire. He sits in imperial garb, with scepter and imperial apple, on a throne. Before him the imperial coat of arms with the double-headed eagle. His throne is on a podium supported by four pillars. They represent the four duchies of Germany: Swabia (three black crowned lions), Brunswick (two leopards), Palatinate (an ascending lion against a black background) and Lorraine (three eagles on a diagonal bar). The emperor is flanked by his three spiritual and four secular electors. On the left are the archbishops of Trier, Cologne and Mainz. They each have a document in their hands. On the right stand the King of Bohemia, the Palatine Count of the Rhine, the Duke of Saxony and the Margrave of Brandenburg. The first holds a scepter and a large golden cup. The second carries three saucers and a napkin. The third has a sword in his hands and the last a key. The attributes refer to their arch offices in the ceremonial imperial household, successively that of archconfessor, archseneschal, archmarshal, and archchamberlain. The second and third rows contain images of young men, full-length or bust portraits with coats of arms. These are various groups: four margraves, four viscounts and four landgraves, four knighthoods and four counties.
