Varved Claystone, West Virginia

Sedimentary rocks are created when particles are laid down in layers by wind or water, and then compacted or cemented together. Some of the finest particles in geologic environments are clay minerals, which have the form of microscopic plates that can be packed solidly into dense layers. Clay deposition, especially in lakes, is often related to seasonal events (such as melting snows) that affect the volume of flowing water and therefore the amount of sediment that can be carried. These annual changes are sometimes preserved in hardened clay beds (claystone) in the form of light and dark bands, known as varves.
