Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe, 1811 - 1896. American abolitionist and author. She is famous for her best-selling anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, originally published as a serial in the newspaper The National Era during 1851 - 1852 before appearing in book form after the serialization had ended. After a portrait published by Alden, Beardsley & Co in 1854, soon after her novel's success.
