Turtle' (1787), submarine by David Bushnell

Turtle' (1787), submarine by David Bushnell (1742-1824) American inventor. Operator turned handle to work propeller. Air in vessel sufficient for it to remain submerged 30 minutes. During American War of Independence, several unsuccessful attempts made to use 'Turtle', armed with single mine, to blow up British warships.  Engraving c1810.
