The Palaestra of Petronii, Thuburbo Majus, Tunisia. Artist: Samuel Magal

The Palaestra of Petronii, Thuburbo Majus, Tunisia. A palaestra was an ancient Greek wrestling school. The events that did not require a lot of space, such as boxing and wrestling, were practiced there. The palaestra functioned both independently and as a part of public gymnasia. A palaestra could exist without a gymnasium, but no gymnasium could exist without a palaestra. Thuburbo Majus (or Thuburbo Maius) is a large Roman site in northern Tunisia located approximately 60km southwest of Carthage. Construction of Thuburbo Majus began in 27BC.
