Embroidered Picture. Culture: American. Dimensions: 16 3/4 x 17 1/2 in. (42.5 x 44.5 cm). Maker: Keturah Rawlins. Date: ca. 1740.
This needlework picture descended in the family of Joseph Alcock. Joseph was the son of Keturah Rawlins, to whom it is attributed. If the picture was in fact done by Rawlins, it would have to have been made when she was an unmarried schoolgirl in about 1715 or 1720, but this is unlikely for stylistic reasons; it resembles other pastoral scenes made in Boston in the 1740s. It is possible that it is not the work of Joseph Alcock's mother at all; however, it could be the schoolwork of his wife, Jane Ring, or some other female relative.
