Astrological Chart, 1405

A chart, perhaps for astrological purposes, created by the illustrator known as Virgil Master, who was active in France from 1380 - 1420. This chart is from around 1405. By the 13th century, astrology was part of everyday medical practice in Europe. By the end of the 1500s, physicians were required by law to calculate the position of the Moon before carrying out complicated medical procedures, such as surgery or bleeding. Tempera colors, gold paint, gold leaf, and ink on parchment.
