French Religious Wars 1562-1598. Fourth charge at the battle of Dreux, 19 December 1562. Constable of France, Anne de Montmorency (1493-1567) leader of the Catholic forces and Louis, Prince de Conde (1530-1569) both taken prisoner and Jacques d'Albon, Marshal Sainte Andre was murdered after falling into Huguenot hands. Very heavy casualties on both sides. Engraving by Jacques Tortorel (fl1568-1590) and Jean-Jacques Perrissin (c1536-1617) from their series on the Huguenot Wars, c1570.
