Emilio Castelar, (1832-1899), 1920s. Artist: Unknown

Emilio Castelar, a superb speaker born in Cadiz in 1832, illustrated liberal views in his speeches and writings. However, when he became  President of the Spanish Republic in 1873, he took no action in favour of the slaves or reform to the Cuban colonial regime. He died in 1899.
