Marilyn Monroe Sings for Troops in Korea, 1954

Captioned: "Marilyn Monroe sings several songs for an estimated 13,000 men of the First Marine Division. Miss Monroe stopped by at the First Marine Regiment on her tour of the military units in Korea." In the 1940s the USO was disbanded due partly to lack of funds. However, in 1950, when the United States entered the Korean War, Secretary of Defense George Marshall and Secretary of the Navy Francis P. Matthews requested that the USO be reactivated. Many stars, both well-known and new, came to perform. Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 - August 5, 1962) was an American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s. She travelled to Korea where she performed for 13,000 American Marines over a three day period.
