JUDA MACCABEO

GIUDA MACCABEO (? - 160 BC), belonging to the noble and ancient Hasmonean family. He led the Jewish rebellion against the Syrian invader Antiochus IV, who intended to eradicate monotheism and impose Hellenic culture by force, to the point of profaning the Temple of Jerusalem by consecrating an altar to Zeus. The revolt of Judah succeeded in freeing Jerusalem and regaining its Temple. "Iudas Machabeorum", a bas-relief decoration from the band depicting famous characters from antiquity and mythological themes, inspired by the medals of the Roman era, carved on the base of the facade of the Basilica of the Certosa di Pavia, a typical example of Lombard Renaissance architecture XV century.
