French Renaissance Gobelins tapestries, (1898). Creator: Unknown.

French Renaissance Gobelins tapestries, (1898). 'Figs 1-3: Borders on a tapestry carpet after [Charles] Le Brun (made 1665-72). Figs 4-6: Border from a tapestry after Noel Coypel (made 1670-80). Fig 7: Border from a tapestry of the 16th century...since the 16th century such wall-decorating carpets again found favour in the houses of the wealthy, all the more since the hangings of wool, woven in the Netherlands, and embellished with various figural representations, were sold all over the world and quite superseded the silk or linen tapestry. Also in France, under Louis XIV such a manufactory of tapestry was established by [the] Gobelin brothers, from whom the tapestries woven there, and afterwards all fabrics of this kind were named, 'Gobelins''. Plate 66 from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898].
