Mouflon sheep marble sculpture, 3rd-2nd millennium BC. This reclining figure of a mouflon (a type of wild sheep) dates from the Mature Harappan period of around 2600 to 1900 BC. It is from the Indus Valley region and culture. Mouflon are from the highland regions of the Near East. This sculpture is a combination of closed outline with a minimum of incised detail that is characteristic of animal sculpture this period at the site of Mohenjo Daro. The function of these animal sculptures is unknown. This object is part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, USA.
