'The Monkey-House', c1876.  London Zoological Society was founded in 1826 by Sir Stamford Raffles and Sir Humphrey Davy, the Zoo opened on 27 April 1828. The Society was granted a Royal Charter in 1829 by King George IV, and in 1847 opened to the public to aid funding. From "Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places.
