Chinese Medicine Doll

Medicine dolls such as this one once were used as a diagnostic tool by Chinese doctors. Until the 19th century, social mores prevented women from appearing naked (even before a doctor). Referencing the body in conversation was also considered somewhat indelicate. The dolls allowed a female patient to point to the area of the body that had caused them to seek treatment.
