'Iron Shipbuilding', 1873. Joseph d'Aguilar Samuda (1813-1885), British mechanical engineer and naval architect. In partnership with his brother Jacob (d1844) he had a shipbuilding enterprise and built iron ships for both naval and merchant marine use. In 1845, with Samuel Clegg junior, he developed the Clegg and Samuda atmospheric railway system. Samuda served as Liberal MP for Tavistock, Devon (1865-1868) and Tower Hamlets, London (1868-1880). Cartoon, making much of Samuda's Jewish background by exaggerating the size of his nose, from Vanity Fair, (London, 15 February 1873).
