Samaras, an esteemed scientist and noted tornado researcher, died with his son Paul and Young while intercepting a violent twister near El Reno, Oklahoma on May 31, 2013. One of the world's best-known storm chasers, Samaras received 18 grants for field work from The National Geographic Society over the years. Samaras and Young were also known from the Discovery Channel show "Storm Chasers," which aired for five years.
