Funeral of Baron von Richthofen, 1918. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (1892-1918) was one of the best known German fighter pilots during the First World War. By 1918, he was regarded as a national hero in Germany, and was regarded with great respect by the Allies. The bright red paint on one of his aeroplanes earned him the name of Red Baron. Richthofen was shot down and killed near Amiens on 21 April 1918. The funeral was held at Bertangles Communal Cemetery on 22 April 1918 with full military honours. Six pallbearers from 3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps are lowering his coffin into the grave.
