Georges Cuvier

Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), French zoologist. Cuvier extended the work of Linnaeus in classification by grouping related classes into phyla and extending the system to fossils. He developed the discipline of comparative anatomy to enable the study of extinct animals from their bones. This work demonstrated conclusively that extinctions did occur.
