Illustration of total excision of the clitoris and labia minora. One of various methods of ritual removal of some or all of the female genitalia. These procedures are performed by a traditional circumciser using a blade or razor, with or without anesthesia. Female genital mutilation has been outlawed or restricted in most of the countries in which it occurs. It is rarely done as a therapeutic medical procedure, such as when cancer has developed in or spread to the clitoris.
