Mound of Ears

[ 1890s Japan - Mound of Ears, Kyoto ] Mimizuka (, Mound of Ears) in Kyoto. The monument is dedicated to the noses that were sliced off at least 38,000 killed Korean soldiers and civilians, and Chinese troops, during the invasions of Korea from 1592 to 1598 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536/1537 1598). It was originally known as hanazuka (, Mound of Noses). The monument still exists but is hardly known among Japanese. 19th century vintage albumen photograph.
