Public kayak and canoe launch on Newtown Creek, an estuary on the border between Brooklyn and Queens in New York City. The creek is the site of one of the largest oil spills ever recorded in the United States, and is now an EPA Superfund site. Various oil refineries have operated in the area since the 19th century, leaking between 17 and 30 million gallons of oil (more than twice as much as the Exxon-Valdez spill) into the creek over a period of decades.
