Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (Dutch pronunciation: [jo?? v?? old?(n)b?rn?v?lt] ), Lord of Berkel en Rodenrijs (1600), Gunterstein (1611) and Bakkum (1613) (September 14, 1547, Amersfoort May 13, 1619, The Hague) was a Dutch statesman who played an important role in the Dutch struggle for independence from Spain. On 20 February 1619, Oldenbarnevelt sentenced to death and beheaded in the Binnenhof, in The Hague. Oldenbarnevelt's last words to the executioner were purportedly: 'Make it short, make it short.'.
