Dogu (Clay Figurine). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: H. 6 1/8 in. (15.6 cm); W. 7 1/4 in. (18.4 cm); D. 2 3/4 in. (7 cm). Like most figurines found at Jomon sites, this one is broken at the waist, perhaps deliberately. Archaeologists conjecture that such figurines were used in ancient practices to ensure fertility.
