Twist-necked Turtle (Platemys platycephala melanonota)

This Twist-necked Turtle (Platemys platycephala melanonota) was onserved around Yanamono, Loreto, Peru, 2015. More often than not, the normal head coloration is yellow and orange or brown, rather than red and orange. I found this turtle at the edge of a forest stream the morning after a heavy downpour. The species is found across the Amazon Basin.
