Herpes simplex virus, TEM

Colorized transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV1 and HSV 2). HSV1 causes infections of the nose, mouth and face, and HSV2, which infects the genitals. There is no cure for herpes simplex infection, but outbreaks can be treated with the antiviral drug acyclovir. Magnification 500,000 X at 10 cm. Viral diameter approximately: 200 nm.
