France, Glanum, Cenotaph of the Julii, north side, relief of a cavalry battle

The Cenotaph of the Julii dates from c. 20 BC. It is one of the best preserved in the Roman world. It bears and inscription and has an unusual tiered form. Its pedestal is carved with historical and mythical reliefs. Seen here is the north face, with a relief depicting a cavalry battle, representing a scene from the Iliad. Above the pedestal is a quadrifrons arch, topped with a structure resembling a round temple or tholos, and in it statues of the dedicatees.
