Benkei, Japanese Warrior Monk, 12th Century

Entitled: "Benkei to kodomo (ataka no matsu)"; shows the legendary monk warrior Benkei offering gifts to two children who have been gathering pine needles. Musashibo Benkei (1155-1189), popularly called Benkei, was a Japanese warrior monk who served Minamoto no Yoshitsune. He is commonly depicted as a man of great strength and loyalty, and a popular subject of Japanese folklore. Woodcut by Shigenaga Nishimura, circa 1716-36.
