Clara Barton, American Humanitarian

Clara Barton (1821 - 1912) was a self-taught nurse who founded the American Red Cross. Barton was an early suffragette, civil rights activist, and is revered for doing humanitarian work at a time when relatively few women worked outside the home. Engraving by John Sartain, 1882. Colorized.
