Charlemagne (742~814) was King of the Franks from 768 to his death. He is also known as Charles I, Karl der Grosse of Germany and Carolus Magnus of the Holy Roman Empire. The ordinary clothes of Charlemagne consisted of a shirt, tunic, breeches (culottes), ribbons tied around the calves, shoes, belt and sword. He wore in winter a thorax, which covered the chest, and a garment called the Venetian mantle. Charlemagne never appeared in public without his sword; the belt and hilt were of silver or gold. For ceremonial wear, he carried a sword enriched with precious stones.
