WILLIAM BARNES WOLLEN. 'The Battle of Colenso: Lieutenant Roberts Galloping Forward to Retrieve The Disaster to the Guns', 1899, (c1900). 'Lieutenant Roberts (the only son of Lord Roberts)...galloped forward with two gun teams ridden by Corporal Nurse and Gunner Young. Three bullets struck Roberts, and Congreve was wounded, but Schofield succeeded in hooking on two guns, and brought them safely away...Congreve and Major Baptie...plunged in again and brought back Roberts, wounded to death. All these gallant officers were awarded the Victoria Cross'. Third and final battle fought during the Black Week of the Second Boer War. It was fought between British and Boer forces from the independent South African Republic and Orange Free State in and around Colenso, Natal, South Africa.
