Reduction of potassium permanganate, 4 of 4. 0.2M solution of acidified iron(II) sulphate (FeSO4) is added to 0.001M solution of potassium permanganate (KMnO4). Purple permanganate MnO4- is reduced to colorless Mn2+ ion, while Fe2+ ion is oxidized to Fe3+: MnO4- + H+ + Fe2+ -> Mn2+ + H20 + Fe3+. A second beaker with potassium permanganate solution is included on the right for colour reference.
