Ernest William Goodpasture (1886-1960), American pathologist and physician. Goodpasture worked on the pathogenesis of a variety of infectious diseases, and parasitism. With colleagues he invented methods for growing viruses and certain bacteria in chicken embryos and eggs. This facilitated the development of vaccines against influenza, chicken pox, smallpox, yellow fever, typhus, Rocky mountain spotted fever, and other diseases.
