Title: Black Death, Medieval Bubonic Plague, 14th Century
Caption: Entitled: "Bring Out Your Dead" engraving by Edmund Evans, England, 1864. A medieval street scene with a town crier and a two wheeled cart making the rounds and collecting the bodies of plague victims; a few people have gathered around a small fire for warmth. The Black Death (1340-1400) was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe in the years 1348-50. The next few centuries were marked by several local outbreaks of lesser severity. The Great Plague of Seville (1647), the Great Plague of London (1665-1666), the Great Plague of Vienna (1679), Great Plague of Riga (1710) and the Great Plague of Marseille (1720), were the last major outbreaks of the bubonic plague in Europe.
