Gregor Mendel

Gregor Mendel (1822 - 1884), Austrian monk and biologist. Mendel conducted experiments in a monestary in the 1860's with garden peas, working out the law of heredity based on ''factors'' (genes) that decide which characteristics are passed from parent to offspring. His work, documented in his monograph ''Experiments with Plant Hybrids, remained unnoticed until 1900. colour enhanced version of BD4640.
