Klaus Hottinger (d. 1524). Swiss shoemaker. First Protestant beheaded in Switzerland. Disciple of Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531), pastor of Grossmünster in Zurich, who participated in the so-called "Affair of the Sausages" in 1522, speaking publicly in a sermon in favor of eating sausages during the Lenten fast. This triggered the Protestant Reformation in Zurich. In September 1523, Hottinger overthrew a large wooden crucifix at Stadelhofen on the outskirts of Zurich, wich stood in front of a mill. After being arrested and imprisoned for six weeks, he was tried and sentenced to two years' banishment from the canton of Zurich. During this time he traveled through different towns offending and criticizing the Catholic Church. In February 1524 Hottinger was arrested in Constance. In Lucerne he was condemned to death and executed by beheading on 9 March 1524. Portrait. Engraving.
