Harstad November 1962. From the fourth serious explosion accident in the Kings Bay mines at Svalbard in which happened on November 5, 1962 where 21 people perished. In the picture, the coffins are kept for funeral in Harstad. (The previous three explosion accidents in King Bay were in 1948, 1952 and 1953 with 15, nine and 16 dead, respectively). Major deficiencies and fraud were revealed, and the case ended with the district in the Storting and Industry Minister Kjell Holler had to go. The Storting then decided to wind up "King Bay" August 23. 1963, and at the same time the Gerhardsen government had to step down. The bourgeois and John Lyng took over the government. Ntb/archive.
