The stinger of the cicada killer wasp. The cicada killer wasp (Sphecius speciosus) is one of the largest wasps in North America, with adult females reaching a size of almost two inches. This wasp will catch and paralyze a cicada with its stinger. An egg will be laid in the paralyzed cicada, which will then be buried. The new wasp will emerge the following summer. They are large and powerful fliers.
