Ascania, Cunard White Star, 1920s. Ascania was launched on 20 December 1923 at the Armstrong Whitworth Shipbuilders Ltd yard in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but due to unforeseen cost overruns, the vessel was not completed until May 1925. During World War II Ascania was modified into a Landing Ship and took part in the Invasion of Sicily in 1943, and the Anzio Landings in 1944.
