Edward Whymper, British mountaineer, 1865 (1956). Whymper is best known for his involvement in the first ascent of the Matterhorn, accomplished in 1865. Whymper reached the summit with Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Hadow, accompanied by guides Michel Croz and the two Peter Taugwalders (father and son). Hadow, Croz, Hudson and Douglas were killed in a fall on the descent. He later went on to travel and climb in Greenland, South America and the Canadian Rockies. A print from People, a volume about the origin and early history of many things, common and less common, essential and inessential, by Readers Union, the Grosvenor Press, London, 1956.
