Altar of the Virgin Mary, Mariazell, Styria, Austria, c1935. Shrine containing a wooden image of the Virgin, in the Gnadenkapelle (built in 1690) of the Basilica Mariä Geburt (Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary). The limewood statue, known as the Magna Mater Austriae (Great Mother of Austria), has been the focus of pilgrimages to the town of Mariazell for hundreds of years.
