Caption: The Nail Makers (Le Cloutier Grossier); Jean-Michel Moreau the younger, French, 1741-1814. This drawing from about 1763. (Pen and black ink and brush with gray wash over traces of black chalk.) Until around 1800, nails were made by hand, and were provided by an artisan known as a nailer or nailor.
